Polytetrafluoroethene, abbreviation: PTFE
Alias: PTFE, tetrafluoroethylene, plastic king, F4.
Advantages of PTFE
PTFE is the special engineering plastics, currently is the corrosion-resistant materials, known as the "plastic king". The main features are high and low temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, high insulation, aging resistance, self-lubrication.
It’s used in aerospace, electronics and electrical appliances, chemical industry, machinery and instruments, food and medical, pumps, valves and pipelines, cars and ships, air compressors, etc., and has become an indispensable material for solving many key technologies in modern industry.
PTFE molecule inert F atoms shielding and protect the C-C bond, and C-F bonding energy is especially stable, the molecular chain is difficult to be destroyed, is a very stable structure. This molecular structure also explains the following excellent properties of PTFE.
Corrosion resistance: In addition to molten alkali metals and a few solvents such as all-alkane hydrocarbons above 300 degrees Celsius, it is resistant to long-term corrosion by any other chemicals.
Resistance to high and low temperatures: it can be used for a long time at -60+260℃.
High lubrication: the smallest coefficient of friction among solid materials, even ice can't compare with it.
Non-adhesion: the smallest surface tension among solid materials, does not stick to any substance.
Weather Resistance: Longest aging life among plastics.
Non-toxicity: the material can be used as artificial blood vessels, non-toxic and non-allergic and other adverse reactions, for food and medicine grade materials.
Insulating properties: a film as thick as a newspaper is enough to resist high voltage electricity of 1500V.
In addition, PTFE also has no moisture absorption, non-flammability, and is extremely to oxygen, ultraviolet light.
Disadvantages of PTFE
Although PTFE has excellent comprehensive performance, but low mechanical strength, large coefficient of linear expansion, poor wear resistance, poor creep resistance, poor thermal conductivity and other shortcomings. In the mechanical strength and other complex conditions, such as being used in the valve sealing industry and its actual limit of safe use of the temperature is generally within -70 ~ +150℃. In order to overcome these shortcomings, PTFE resin can be filled with reinforcing agents to improve the mechanical properties of the material, in order to expand the scope of application of its materials.
Introduction to the properties of colored PTFE
The original color of PTFE is milky white, while colored PTFE is because the PTFE base material is filled with auxiliary materials. Auxiliary materials can be divided into two categories according to the use: enhancement agent and color powder agent.
Color powder agent class: is filled with color powder in PTFE, can freely be black, yellow, red, green, blue and so on. Color powder agent is only to change the color of PTFE, ratio of the filler is a small amount so the effect of PTFE's original performance can be ignored. Theoretically, the color powder agent should be able to affect the chemical stability of PTFE, insulation, tensile strength and other mechanical properties. Therefore, some special occasions need to aware of it. Colored PTFE meet customers’ demands who have requirements for visual colors.
